Curious to learn a little more about Father’s Day? Or how to find the perfect gift for your hero dad? Read on as we have all the interesting details.
Father’s Day, as the name suggests, is a day to acknowledge our dads. Here I want to specify. When I say “dads”, I am not just referring to our biological fathers, but to all the father figures in our life, our special heroes, that dedicate their time and energy to raise us, love us unconditionally, and always put us first. It is a day to express our love and to thank them for all they do.
But why do we need a day like that? Actually, we don’t. And that is true for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, and many more celebrations that we have. We should show our loved once gratitude every single day.
On the other side, what’s the harm of having such a special day for our dads? We, here at the Crystal Wonderland like the idea. That’s why we decided to do some research on the origin and history of Father’s Day. We wanted to check if it is an American tradition or a world-wide accepted celebration. Here’s what we found.
Origin and History of Father’s Day
In the United States, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. The main reason this holiday started is a young woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd. She was the daughter of William Jackson Smart, veteran of the Civil War, who raised his six children in Spokane, Washington all by himself, after his wife died.
Sonora was inspired by the efforts Anna Jarvis made to establish Mother's Day. She decided to establish an official equivalent of Mother’s Day for male parents. Sonora initially chose June 5, her father’s birthday, for the date of celebration. But it was postponed to the third Sunday of June. The holiday immediately received wide unofficial support from different people. By the end of World War II, it has been a national institution.
In 1972, Father’s Day was recognized as a federal holiday by former U.S. President Richard Nixon.
Father’s Day Around the World
Nowadays, Father’s Day is celebrated in almost every country in the world. It exists for the same purpose - to honor the glory of fatherhood. Usually on this day it is custom to give gifts as symbol of appreciation to dad.

Macau and Hong Kong), Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Singapore, Slovakia, Turkey, the Philippines, France, the Netherlands, Chile, Switzerland, South Africa, and Japan.
